Small Bathroom Trends

There’s a revolution going on, and you’re probably blissfully unaware. Over the last 12 months, we have seen some great design ideas starting to be used in small bathrooms. No longer a room to be embarrassed about or spend your life apologising for, new bathroom styling celebrates all things small. It comes off the back of the current trend for small house design and builds - and it makes sense that with a small house comes a small bathroom.

Storage is no longer king.

Gone are the days of needing lots of storage in a bathroom. This merely puts a plaster over the real problem. Stop hoarding. YouTube is full of videos about decluttering and space-saving ideas. It’s time to embrace a more minimalist attitude. Large vanities under kitchen sinks are a poor use of space, and how many ties do things get lost for months at the back of the cupboard?

Replace the under sink vanity with open shelves and a floating sink - dare to bare and so show off your lotions and potions.

Focus on Function.

Once you clear clutter and replace the oversized bathroom vanity with something more minimalist, think of all the useful things you can do with the space. Like adding an all-in-one washer and dryer. Or creating a vanity space.

Finish Strong.

As your bathroom is only a small space your fit-out costs might be less. This doesn’t mean you should go cheap, just that you have more money available for the finishing.

Some of the most expensive items in a bathroom design are the fixtures, tile and finishes. Since you’re working with a smaller space, you need less. It’s time to break out of thinking that a small bathroom isn’t worth the money. It’s time to splurge on making your small bathroom design look like a million bucks! Some ways to add more luxury on a little less budget include:

  • Choosing quality accent lighting fixtures

  • Tiling a stripe (or the upper half of your bathroom) in a more expensive tile or marble

  • Adding a towel warmer that doubles as a towel rack

  • Swapping your toilet for a new floating style

  • Upgrading to a glass shower door, which is the next small bathroom design idea

Stop lying Around.

We’re not saying you’re lazy, but how much do you really need a bath? Get rid of the bath, free up space and splurge on a luxurious shower instead - they use less water, they’re better for you AND they take up a whole lot less space.

Think texture.

Strong patterns and textures add depth and play to a space, creating the illusion of more size and life. Explore textured wall coverings for something different and don’t be afraid to go for bold floor colours.

Walls were made for floating.

Float everything, including the toilet, from your walls. It’s a great way to make cleaning easier when you can access the floor below. Not to mention the space looks bigger because our eye tends to judge space by analyzing the floor area. You also maximize valuable wall space, which is often left bare. And let’s be honest, it looks pretty fresh and cool!

Explore floating toilets, shelves and vanities and you’ll be sure not to sink your dreams (see what we did there?)

Who is the fairest of them all?

Not sure? Then add a mirror. Mirrors do an incredible job at creating the illusion of more space. Want to add more space to your small bathroom design? Then add more mirrors, especially ones that fill entire walls. They really make a difference.

It’s not just black and white.

An all-white bathroom does feel brighter and lighter, but it can look a little cold or lack the depth your eye registers as space. Adding black to your bathroom, in the form of black walls or a black-and-white tile design or a black ceiling adds the “POW!” your small bathroom is begging for.
